Measuring spunlaced nonwovens with infrared technology

03.06.2020 Quality assurance and process optimization are important parameters in nonwovens production. During the corona pandemic, high-quality nonwovens, such as hydroentangled nonwovens, currently play a particularly important role in the production of protective clothing and equipment.

Medical personnel and first-aiders such as the fire brigade and police are dependent on them – and must be able to rely 100% on their functionality.
Deviations in the basis weight of the nonwovens can lead to errors in functionality or to unnecessarily high raw material consumption. The same applies to the residual moisture in the product. If the product is too moist, there is a risk of mold growth, and if the nonwovens is too dry, the energy consumption in the line is too high.
The manufacturer of measuring, control and automation systems Mahlo GmbH & Co. KG, Saal a.d. Donau/Germany, offers an infrared sensor for the determination and evaluation of the basis weight and moisture content, which has been calibrated to the respective fiber types. The measuring process is non-contact, non-destructive and without unwanted influence on the product properties.
The measurement of moisture with an infrared or microwave sensor in combination with a beta or x-ray sensor for the basis weight can thus be dispensed with.
The necessary measurement and control tasks are performed by Mahlo's modular quality control system Qualiscan QMS. The cross profile of the measurement is mapped over the entire fabric width by means of traversing sensors. Depending on the application, the infrared sensors Infralot IMF or Infrascope NIR are used.
